Tips for Tipping

It’s curious that of all the big ideas we’re taught in school, sometimes practical knowledge / common sense is absent.  So tipping after a meal - you probably see this all the time too (even with adults).  You get to the end, get the bill, and the tipping part turns into a futile exercise in patience and [perceived] complex math.  Nothing ruins a fun night like someone pulling out a calculator either.

Well, it doesn’t have to be so.

It’s really simple:  take the first number(s) in the bill and double.  That’s about 20% then go up/down a couple bucks based on the situation.  Super simple - you’ll wow your friends and dates!  So, $80 total - 8 x 2 = 16.  16 is the tip and the total is 96.00.  Easy easy.

Next - when it comes to splitting a bill amongst cards (or cash even) DO NOT factor a tip into the division of the check.  Just have the server divide it up, as-is, and everyone can use their own tip line to leave the full tip.  It’s way easier (and you can use the doubling method described above).

Finally:  Remember that a server is not a slave.  They are there to serve and attend to you, deserving of respect and common decency.  Don’t be cheap - it’s not easy work.  They also usually appreciate cash, if you have it!
